What Is Dermaplaning?
As we age, our cell turnover decreases and this affects our skin texture and tone. Dermaplaning (also known as microplaning or blading) gently buffs the top layer of dead skin cells away helps to reveal a brighter and smoother complexion leaving skin ultra-smooth and perfectly prepped for makeup, so it takes on an “airbrushed” finish. Build up of dead skin cells can make your complexion look dull and contribute to clogged pores and spots. Dermaplaning helps clear the skin so skin peels, facials, skin products and serums can penetrate deeper for maximum impact.
During a dermaplaning session, the skin is held taut while using a surgical blade held at an angle to shave off dead skin and fine hair from the face. Dermaplaning can also provide a clean and sterile way to get rid of this fine, vellus hair (peach fuzz) that appears on the face. It’s a form of hair removal that can exfoliate the skin and provide a brighter visage and a youthful appearance.

What is dermaplaning and is it safe?
Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It is extremely safe when performed by a professionally trained practitioner. The technique is performed by using a specialised, sterile surgical instrument. Once the skin is properly prepped, the practitioner holds the skin taught and gently scrapes the blade at a 45-degree angle.
Once the vellus hair is removed, will it grow back quicker and thicker?
We get asked this alot! No, this is physiologically impossible. The soft, fine vellus hair will grow back slowly – usually in about 4 weeks and no different than it was previously.
Can dermaplaning cause damage to the skin?
Excessive scraping, nicks and cuts can cause damage to the skin. This is why it is imperative that a professional practitioner who has had the highest level of training, and who has the correct tools carries out the treatment.
How often can this treatment be done?
Dermaplaning can be carried out every 3-4 weeks. Treating the skin in this manner removes about 2 – 3 weeks’ worth of dead skin cells. You should always leave enough time between treatments to allow the skin to complete its normal skin cycle of approximately 30 days before repeating.
Can I have dermaplaning alongside other facial treatments?
Yes. Dermaplaning is great when accompanied with any facial, including enhancing the effectiveness of LED Light Therapy. This is because it helps to enhance the absorption of light into the skin’s epidermis, speeding up the benefits. Likewise it helps the penetration of many skin products – talk to your practitioner about which products are best for you.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
All skin types can benefit from dermaplaning. Even men can be treated (over non-bearded areas only). It is particularly beneficial for clients suffering with:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Fine vellus facial hair (peach fuzz)
- Uneven & rough skin
- Dull skin
It is important to always discuss any allergies or skin sensitivities with your practitioner before starting a treatment.
Is the treatment painful?
No, dermaplaning is an exfoliative technique that uses the edge of a scalpel moved at 45 degrees (superficially) along the surface of the skin to smooth and exfoliate the skin and remove dead cells and fine vellus hairs. This is enhanced along with a facial massage and is surprisingly relaxing and pain free. It is a procedure that can be compared to the sensation of shaving your legs.
Are there any pre-treatment and post-treatment care instructions?
Yes! Please refer to our protocols section for more information.
What is the difference between dermaplaning and microneedling?
Microneedling is a more intense and deeper treatment for generating dramatic skin transformations like plumping, reducing open pores and acne scarring. Dermaplaning provides more of an immediate freshness that helps target peach fuzz.
Microneedling or collagen induction therapy mimics the effects of fractional laser by generating micro-punctures in the skin. This controlled wound-healing response in the deep layers of the skin stimulates the collagen. It results in a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Dermaplaning will NOT make your hair grow back thicker or darker!
Once your hair begins to grow back, it might feel different because the hair was cut straight across, but it’s actually the same texture as it was before and it will grow at the same speed
