SPF Do’s and Don’ts to Live by This Spring and Summer

You’ve probably been told time and time again that you should wear SPF everyday no matter the weather outside. Rain, hail or shine, during summer and even in winter there’s really no excuse to skip the sunscreen during the day. This is especially important given we already know that harmful UVA and UVB rays can penetrate clouds and even be reflected through glass when indoors. Since the need to protect your skin with SPF isn’t a question, we thought we’d take a look at how to use SPF the right way in order to reap the full benefits of this non-negotiable when it comes to skincare. Here are some of the most effective ways to use SPF this spring and summer:

Do’s and Don’ts

• Do stick to reputable SPF brands: Back in 2014, a number of global consumer reports surfaced that led to an investigation surrounding the accuracy of labels on SPF products. It was found that only a small percentage of brands offered the level of SPF protection that they claimed on their labels. Make sure that when you’re selecting SPF products, they are clinically proven to protect your skin and that their SPF levels and hours of protection are backed with research.

• Don’t get caught up in the investment: Sunscreens that are more than SPF 30 cost more, but it doesn’t necessarily provide 3x the protection. The science behind this is that SPF 30 blocks 97% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, while SPF 100 blocks 99%. Although there is a significant difference, don’t let that deter you from buying suncreens with lower SPF if you’re concerned about the cost. Even a sunscreen that has SPF 15 already blocks 94% of the UV rays.

• Do reapply sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outdoors: The best time to apply your sunscreen is at least half an hour before being exposed to the sun. Although mineral sunscreens usually contain zinc oxide that reflects UV rays shortly after application, traditional sunscreens don’t work that way.

• Don’t use sunscreen sparingly: Even if you’re using the best sunscreen there is, it won’t be effective if you aren’t using enough of it. It is recommended that you apply a dollop to your face and cover the entire surface of your skin when it comes to the rest of your body.

• Do use other ways to protect your skin: Wear hats, sunglasses, or any other protective clothing over your usual layer of sunscreen. Sunscreen can go a long way in protecting your skin against skin cancer, but it’s also best to complement your sunscreen with additional measures too. You can never be too careful!

• Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your ears: When applying your sunscreen, there are certain parts of your body that are easy to forget which can in turn become a high-risk area for skin cancer. Be sure to remember to apply sunscreen to all the areas of your body that could be exposed to the sun.

Sunscreens are a must if you want to protect your skin from sun damage. When used correctly, you are not only looking after your skin by fighting the signs of premature skin ageing but you’re also reducing the risk of skin cancer. Remind yourself and your loved ones how important SPF is, especially this spring and summer!
