What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound.
It is an advanced cosmetic technology which can significantly tighten and lift several areas of the face, reduce the signs of ageing and improve the tone of the skin in a single session, with potentially long-lasting effects.
The technology is unique in its ability to penetrate the dermis and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer.
No other technology can target these layers deep within the skin in a non-invasive procedure. SMAS is the same layer which is tightened during conventional facelift surgery. Unlike surgery, HIFU is more affordable and requires no time off work.
HIFU uses multiple beams of ultrasound and individually the beams do not affect the tissue. However, their area of convergence under the skin becomes a point of thermal energy. Heating the tissue below the surface causes it to contract and tighten, while also forming new collagen fibres. Collagen proteins begin to lose their integrity with age, which causes frown lines, crow’s feet, and a drooping neck. Tightening the SMAS layer and replenishing collagen will tighten and tone the skin.
The full treatment is provided as a course of 3 separate procedures in order to achieve the best results.

- Please avoid any facial peels 4 weeks before treatment and microdermabrasion 2 weeks before treatment.
- It’s recommended that male clients come to their appointment clean shaven.
- No waxing, depilatory creams, or electrolysis to the area being treated for 1 week prior.

- If you’re prone to cold sores, you can take antiviral medication for 2 days prior to the day of the treatment to reduce the chance of a breakout.
- If you are currently taking any acne or skin thinning or photosensitive medication we cannot treat your skin as there is a risk of burning.
- If you have any open sores, acne, infection or skin sensitivity in the area we cannot treat you with HIFU.
- We cannot perform HIFU if you have previously had threads within the last year.
- Avoid IPL/laser procedures for at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment.

What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for ‘High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound’ and it is a non-surgical facial treatment that uses ultrasound to provide a lift the face and tone loose or sagging skin.
What does HIFU do?
HIFU deposits focused ultrasound energy below the surface of the skin, contracting the facial layer and stimulating the creation of new collagen in the area. HIFU is highly effective in toning and lifting the skin.
Does HIFU involve any invasive procedures?
Not at all. Unlike a traditional facelift, HIFU is a non-invasive procedure that addresses the skin and supports the underlying layers without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.
Is HIFU safe?
The treatment has proven safe in several clinical studies, and it is used in clinics across the world. Additionally, ultrasound energy has had an excellent track record across many disciplines of medicine for over 50 years.
Is there any downtime?
Due to the non-invasive nature of HIFU treatments, there is no downtime from the treatment. Please see our post-treatment protocols for things to do and avoid following HIFU treatment to ensure you get the best results and take care of your skin – including avoiding prolonged sun exposure and makeup for 24 hours.
How long until I see results?
Some clients enjoy immediate initial effects; however, the ultimate lifting and toning results will take place over the following 2 to 3 months. During this time, tired collagen is replaced with new collagen that has a higher level of elasticity. As the collagen-building process continues, you may see further improvements up to 6 months after the procedure.
Is HIFU painful?
Every patient’s comfort threshold is different, and you may experience slight discomfort while the ultrasound energy is delivered. This is temporary, and the feelings you may experience are a positive sign that the process is working.
Does HIFU have any side effects?
You may experience slight redness for up to an hour following the treatment, and a small percentage of our clients do experience minor swelling, tingling or tenderness. These symptoms are mild and temporary.
How long does treatment take?
The answer varies depending on what the treatment is targeting. A full face treatment typically takes 45-60 minutes, and a partial face or brow treatment will take approximately 30 minutes.
Who is HIFU treatment for?
A good candidate for HIFU is someone with skin that has “relaxed” to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm. Typically, a lowered eyebrow line and sagging skin on the eyelids are the first signs of “maturing” skin. Typically, those in their thirties and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are good candidates for HIFU.
How long do the results last?
Following the HIFU treatment, clients can have fresh collagen present for over a year. Future touch-up treatments can help keep pace with the ageing process, as this varies by individual.
What concerns does HIFU target?
HIFU addresses mild to moderate loose or sagging skin. Specifically, by reconditioning and renewing the skin from within, HIFU will lift the brow, reducing excess skin on the lids, opening up the eyes, and giving an overall refreshed look. Additionally, HIFU is effective for the face, neck, chest, arms, elbows, tummy, inner thighs and knees.
How many treatments will I need?
The full treatment is provided as a course of 3 separate procedures in order to achieve the best results.
Are there any pre-treatment and post-treatment care instructions?
Yes! Please refer to our protocols section for more information.
What is the difference between HIFU and a CACI microcurrent facial?
CACI stimulates the muscles to tighten and tone, alongside lymphatic drainage whereas HIFU generates collagen for improved skin texture.
Microcurrent therapy delivers tiny electrical impulses that mirror the body’s own natural bioelectrical field. Microcurrent stimulation helps to re-educate the muscles and can lift, firm and tone. Microcurrent in aesthetics is commonly described as “facial toning” or “non-surgical face lifting” due to the dramatic lifting effect that it has on facial muscles and contours.
What is the difference between HIFU and a PDO thread lift?
HIFU is used more for skin conditioning, helping to stimulate collagen and improve overall skin texture and tone with a gentle lift. A PDO Threadlift is more for a full facial lifting that gives a dramatic effect, especially for the jowls and cheekbones – that’s why it’s know as the ‘lunchtime facelift’.
Local anaesthetic will be applied to the treated area and then a practitioner will use a cannula or a micro-needle to insert the PDO threads into the deeper layer of your skin. Polydioxanone is a clinically proven material already used in surgical sutures and this is the preferred choice of material for a thread face lift as it naturally and safely breaks down and dissolves in the body. The insertion of the PDO threads triggers the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, which lasts for at least 2-3 years. The threads themselves dissolve over six months as new fibrous connective tissue grows around them. Desired results will be seen after one PDO thread lift treatment in comparison to a course of HIFU treatments.
